Target’s Rob Cross completed the most astonishing debut year in PDC history, by becoming the new World Champion – beating fellow Target player Phil Taylor in the final with a stunning performance.

The 27-year-old averaged 107.67 in a clinical display that included some huge checkouts of 167, 153 and 140 for the match.

Cross was working as an electrician last year, before deciding to take up darts professionally, and has gone on to claim the biggest title in the sport in his very first attempt.

“It’s phenomenal; I’ve not got words for it,” said Cross, “For something this year that I came into not knowing what to expect, this game has changed my life massively.”

Rob Cross is a perfect example of how passion, practice, determination and self-belief means that you really can achieve greatness.

The game was Phil Taylor’s last of his record-breaking career, with “The Power” now retiring from professional darts after 30 years in which he won more than 100 televised titles, including 16 world championship crowns.

Taylor missed double-twelve for the perfect nine dart leg during the match, but admitted afterwards that he was beaten by the better player on the night.

“He was fantastic – he was like me thirty years ago: he was aggressive, and everything that he should be. For me, he’s a breath of fresh air, and Michael van Gerwen’s now got somebody to compete with.”

Rob Cross claims not only the Sid Waddell Trophy but £400,000 in prize money, which lifts him up to third in the world rankings – he will also compete in the Premier League for the first time, alongside fellow Target player Raymond van Barneveld.

There is one more thing we know for sure…it was the fairytale ending for both of our players. Phil got to the final of his last ever PDC game, and after the most incredible career in darts history, he will be commemorated fittingly with the Matchplay being named the Phil Taylor Trophy…oh and Rob won in his first year.

One story ends, however the other is just beginning.

Stay tuned for our exclusive interview with Rob Cross.
