TARGET RENEW PARTNERSHIP WITH UDUK
We are so pleased to announce the continued partnership with University Darts UK. The UDUK for short – are dedicated to expanding darts at university level. From humble beginnings, there are now hundreds of students playing in organised events around the country. The current UDUK committee was established in 2016, and tasked with making university darts more organised and professional than ever before.
“Becoming a partner of Target Darts was a big part of that evolution. Target have provided not only the boards and equipment to make our biggest events possible but the support and marketing nous required to make the UDUK a truly professional outfit.” – Ed McCosh, University Darts UK Vice President
Currently, there is one league affiliated with the UDUK, the Northern Universities Darts League (NUDL). This is split into three regions – North, South and West – with the former pair divided into two divisions. The next objective for UDUK league play is to introduce a Southern Universities Darts League. Any UK university is welcome to become a part of the UDUK, no matter their location. The long-term aim is to make inter-university leagues a possibility for every university team that wishes to join.
The main attraction for players are the two open annual events, the Target Darts UDUK Big Weekender and the NUDL Singles. The Big Weekender is a darting jamboree for current students, graduates and staff alike. It takes place across two days, with the UDUK Singles Championship taking place on the Saturday, and the UDUK Team Championship staged on the Sunday. This year, the Big Weekender in Lancaster will feature a Friday night exhibition, which world champions Martin Adams and Scott Waites are attending. The NUDL Singles is open to any players registered with teams participating in the NUDL.
University darts is growing exponentially. In the past four years, the number of NUDL teams has grown from ten to 24. A record 283 players entered the 2017 UDUK Singles Championship in Sheffield, and 37 teams took part. 278 players and 29 teams are scheduled to appear in Lancaster.
“One major objective for the UDUK committee is making university darts accessible and enjoyable for everyone. That means encouraging the women’s game to further develop and making sure everyone, be they BME, LGBTQ, disabled or otherwise, can feel at home in a darts society.” – Ed McCosh, University Darts UK Vice President.
Darts societies are formed by enterprising students with a passion for the game – but it can be difficult to keep them going. The UDUK committee is always available to provide guidance and welcome new teams into the family. Anyone who needs information can send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, or get in touch with University Darts UK on Facebook and Twitter.
